PersonalVPN-Mail-WorkArounds
From Witopiawiki
Background
WiTopia provides SMTP mail relay services for its customers. This allows us to stop would-be spammers from using the WiTopia network gateways (bad for you and us if they could) but also should ensure that your ISP doesn't perceive you as a potential spammer or security risk while you are "cloaked" by using a WiTopia IP address instead of one of theirs.
Use of WiTopia's mail relays should require no configuration changes on your part. Sometimes though, you may need to tweak your mail settings a bit. If you are having issues sending or receiving mail while using WiTopia VPN service, please read on.
Some Users Can Receive Mail, But Not Send It
The first and most obvious problem is this: if your mail server expects you to log in somehow, there will be a problem. The problem arises because you're attempting to present authentication credentials to the WiTopia server. The WiTopia server isn't set up to do any sort of authentication and won't know what to do with your authentication attempt, so this will likely fail, possibly in a cryptic way, depending on your software.
Since the technique we're using is widely deployed, there are normally workarounds that involve changing your mail client to point to a different port on your mail server, which is not intercepted. Different companies use different ports -- 587 is commonly used (the "submission" port) so setting your outgoing port to 587 may solve the problem.
If you've any hesitation in doing this, the proper thing to do is to locate your ISP or company's help line and ask them the solution to "how to send email if I'm visiting a network where port 25 is intercepted". Follow their directions. After you're done, email should still work when PersonalVPN is off, and should now work when PersonalVPN is on.
