Welcome to WiTopia

The following are detailed (perhaps, overly so) instructions on how to activate your personalVPN™ service(s) with WiTopia.

We’ve automated a lot of the process versus the competition, but a VPN is still a complex network security service so we’d recommend skimming through them once before jumping in. Then, proceed carefully and you should join the ranks of the fashionably encrypted within a few minutes.

REGISTRATION

Click on this link: https://register.witopia.net/personalVPN and enter your ORD# and e-mail address from your Order Confirmation e-mail. Then, click “Submit.”

NOTE: IF YOU ARE REINSTALLING, AND HAVE ALREADY REGISTERED, SKIP THIS STEP.

ACTIVATION

On this page, read through the information and make any necessary changes.

You’ll note we currently include a separate PPTP VPN login account as an option to connect to us. PPTP can come in handy so we recommend you CHECK the “Configure PPTP account” box and you will be given the option to choose a PPTP username and password during activation.

NOTE: If for some reason you’re not in the mood to choose a PPTP username and password right now, you can leave box blank and do it later by clicking on this link: https://register.witopia.net/personalVPN.

CLICK "Submit," and in a few moments a screen should load with a button that says “Build it” at the bottom.

If you receive an error, go back and check your ORD# or e-mail address for extra spaces or typos. The fields are case-sensitive.

CLICK "Build it" button to create your customized personalVPN™ Installation Package.

DOWNLOADING

You should now see a screen that urges you to RIGHT-CLICK on the link displayed and BOOKMARK it, so please do.

All bookmarked? Okay, CLICK on link to download your Installer Package.

A box should appear on your PC inviting you to Download Windows_PVPN_Installer.EXE

CLICK “Save File” to Download to your PC. AFTER INSTALLATION, PLEASE KEEP THIS INSTALLER SOMEPLACE SAFE; PREFERABLY ON A SEPARATE DRIVE. IF YOU EVER HAVE A HARD DRIVE CRASH, ETC. YOU CAN REINSTALL YOUR VPN IN SECONDS USING IT.

INSTALLING

Either CLICK “Open” in your Downloads box, or double-click on the new Windows_PVPN_Installer.EXE icon that should now be on your desktop.

The Installation Wizard should start.

If you have a previous version of personalVPN™ installed it will be uninstalled first and then follow steps in Wizard to install new version.

IMPORTANT: DON'T CHANGE ANY INSTALLATION OPTIONS

SOME XP USERS WILL RECEIVE A WARNING ABOUT THE “TAP-Win32 Adapter” not passing “Windows Logo Testing.”

IGNORE THIS WARNING and CLICK “Continue Anyway” button. It is an outdated warning and does not happen on later versions of Windows.

CONNECTING

After you complete the Wizard, you should have an icon named “personalVPN” on your desktop.

THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS CONCERNING RUNNING AS ADMINISTRATOR ARE CRITICAL:

For all Windows OS’s, YOU MUST RUN personalVPN™ AS ADMINISTRATOR. For most non-Vista users this is likely already the case. Vista requires an extra step to make sure.

VISTA USERS: RIGHT-CLICK on "personalVPN" icon and SELECT “Run as administrator” and the icon should also appear in your taskbar in lower right-hand corner of screen.

NON-VISTA USERS: DOUBLE-CLICK on the "personalVPN" icon and a similar icon should appear in your taskbar in lower right-hand corner with two RED monitor screens.

Now, simply, RIGHT-CLICK on icon in your lower taskbar and choose “Connect.”

A connection log should run and the screens should go from YELLOW to GREEN and a 10.x.x.x IP address will be assigned.

That's it. You should now be connected!

TESTING YOUR personalVPN™

To TEST that you are fully secured and anonymized, go to http://www.ipchicken.com (or any IP address tester) and you should see a WiTopia IP address displayed instead of your ISP’s. You should also see "vpn.witopia.net" (or something very similar) under “Name Address” in Advanced section.

If you still see your same IP address and ISP when VPN is connected you need to RIGHT-CLICK on icon and “Exit” then ensure you are running as ADMINISTRATOR by RIGHT-CLICKING on the original desktop "personalVPN" icon and select "Run as administrator". That is most common error.

If you feel something is still not quite right, RIGHT-CLICK icon (MAC Users, click on "Details...") and VIEW a connection log.

Most issues can be solved by viewing the personalVPN™ FAQ at http://wiki.witopia.net/wiki/FAQ

You can also send the log to us at support@witopia.net to start a trouble ticket.

DISCONNECTING AND ONGOING USE

When not using your personalVPN™, simply RIGHT-CLICK on icon in taskbar and choose “Disconnect.” If you "Quit" or "Close," you will lose the icon in your taskbar and have to Restart the VPN as you did above.

It's best to disconnect personalVPN™ when not actively using your computer.

That’s about it. Enjoy your Encryption and Thank You for your business!!
