Alternate Ports

WiTopia offers alternate tcp 443 servers. These servers can be used if you need to access a proxy server or find that the other (MAIN or ALTERNATE) gateways are being blocked.

WiTopia currently has alternate tcp 443 port servers in the following cities:

Washington, DC Metro (Northern Virginia) TCP 443 Server

Hong Kong, TCP 443 Server

Manchester, UK TCP 443 Server

Los Angeles, CA TCP 443 Server

Changing from UDP 1194 to TCP 443

CUSTOMERS WITH WITOPIA GATEWAYS LISTED

Use any of the TCP 443 servers available in the list of WiTopia Gateways.

FOR CUSTOMERS THAT DO NOT HAVE A LIST OF WITOPIA GATEWAYS

Here are the options available to you

tcpvpn.witopia.net - all alternate port personalVPN™ servers

tcpvpn.hkg.witopia.net - alternate port server(s) in Hong Kong, CN

tcpvpn.iad.witopia.net - alternate port server(s) in Northern Virginia

tcpvpn.lax.witopia.net - alternate port server(s) in Los Angeles, CA, US

tcpvpn.man.witopia.net - alternate port server(s) in Manchester, UK

To configure personalVPN™ to use TCP port 443 (the alternate port we have chosen), please do the following:

BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES TO YOUR CONFIGURATION FILE, WE STRONGLY SUGGEST MAKING A BACKUP COPY

If you are running Windows, we suggest you follow the steps here

Mac users running Tunnelblick, click on the Tunnelblick icon, choose "Details..." and then "Edit Configuration"

1. Look for the lines beginning with "proto" and "remote" and change them from this:

   proto udp

   remote vpn.witopia.net 1194

   to exactly this:

   proto tcp

   remote tcpvpn.witopia.net 443 (or choose one of the other options presented above)

   Note: With a Mac, you may have to do the following before Tunnelblick will allow you to save the new configuration

   a. Go into openvpn folder found here: Home Folder -> Library -> openvpn

   b. Highlight/select the personalVPN™ .conf file

   c. Go to File menu at top and choose "Get Info" and change permissions at bottom to allow "everyone" to "Read & Write".

   d. Modify and Save the config again.

2. Save the config
3. Reconnect to the VPN

Proxy Users

Customers required to use a proxy can now use personalVPN™ through a proxy when using TCP 443. Here's what you need to do:

FOR WINDOWS CUSTOMERS:

1. Windows users can configure the Proxy Settings through the OpenVPN GUI
   • Right-click on the gui icon and select "Proxy Settings" and a window similar to this should appear:

   

   • Select "Manual Configuration" and enter the IP Address and Port provided to you by your IT department or ISP, then click "OK"
2. Reconnect to the VPN

FOR MAC CUSTOMERS (using Viscosity version)

1. Click the VPN icon, then click Preferences
2. Select a TCP 443 gateway of your choice and click Edit (if you are in China, please try using the Los Angeles, CA TCP 443 gateway - the performance may be better than the Hong Kong TCP 443 gateway).
3. Click the Proxy tab and this window should appear:

   

Check the "Connect using proxy" box and put in the proxy settings. If you have any issues, please email support@witopia.net with your proxy setting information and we can help you.
